Discworld Monthly - Issue 265 April 2019

Issue 265

1. Editorial

Welcome to our April 2019 issue of Discworld Monthly. Today three Discworld books were released with new covers and introductions by famous authors. The new covers were designed to appeal to new fans, those that might not yet know there were going to be fans, that might have in the past been put off by the wonderfully colourful covers we all know and love. The new covers were not designed to appeal to long term fans as we already have our colourful Josh and Paul versions.

We posted about the new releases today via our social media outlets and I have to say that the way some of the Discworld community reacted almost makes me want to just give up and stop being a fan. One person privately messaged us and told us that we would be going to hell for promoting the covers, another stated that Terry would be spinning in his grave because of them and these were just the tip of the iceberg.

Over the last four years since Terry left us I've seen the best and the worst of the community. But today's vitriolic outbursts have left us reeling. We've witnessed Neil Gaiman being attacked for the cover of Mort that he provided the introduction for and know of at least one shop that is considering not stocking the new books for fear of retaliation.

Is this really where Discworld fandom has gone? We are an ageing population and desperately need new fans to join us. We need to keep saying his name and need to continue to be more Terry.

I know that the vast majority of the Discworld community are wonderful, decent human beings and that we shouldn't be swayed by a very small but vocal minority of fans. Nobody can say what Terry would have made of all of this but I know that the infighting and the nastiness would make him very unhappy.

I think the old adage of, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" is a lesson we could all use just a little be more,

I personally loved reading the introductions by Neil Gaiman, Ben Aaronovich and Joanne Harris, they reminded me why I continue to love Terry's works and gave me an excuse to pick up some well loved stories once again... I think we should all learn not to judge a book by its cover.

On a much happier note, at the end of March Discworld Monthly's editorial team went to the Irish Discworld Convention in Cork. We had an absolutely amazing time and look forward to the next one in a couple of years. It's all been a bit hectic since we've got back so the review will have to wait until next issue.

A week or two after the Irish Convention was the Australian Convention and again Discworld Monthly's editorial team were there... Well via a skype call (so we were kinda there) . The wonderful mad attendees got up to listen to Rachel and I talk about Discworld Monthly at 9am in Australia (about midnight over here) . We had a great time and hope, that at some point in the future we'll be able to visit in person. The dates for the 2021 Australian Discworld Convention: Nullus Anxietas 7a will take place in Sydney, NSW from 2nd - 4th July 2021.

The month of May has us very excited. We will be going to the European premiere of Troll Bridge at the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival on Monday 27th May and Rachel will be hosting a, live via Facebook, Q&A session with Daniel Knight, Christian Bloch and lead actor Don Bridges. It promises to be a wonderful experience and we hope to see you there.

A wonderful way to bookend that week will be the release on Amazon Prime Video of the full six episodes of the TV adaptation of Good Omens. We plan to binge watch all six episodes. What more could true fans want.

Well if you want more, it appears that Narrativia are really moving forward with work on The Watch TV Series. Very little new has been said about it but it sounds like it should be another amazing production. Discworld is very much coming back into our living rooms via our televisions in the future.

And finally, I almost forgot to mention that the new edition of Dodger with a wonderfully colour cover by Laura Ellen Anderson was also released today. We'll be getting our copy from the Discworld Emporium when we visit them this weekend.

2. News

2.1 SFX Magazine - Issue 313

SFX magazine Issue 313 has just been published and features a 12 page article all about the upcoming Good Omens series. [No spoilers here - Rach]

It comes with a double sided poster, the best side being the Good Omens side (verses Neil Gaiman's The Sandman Side) . It also comes with a special supplement "An SFX celebration". It is a 2 in 1 that celebrates Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

The stuff about Terry is interesting enough to warrant purchasing a copy of this issue. Snippets of past interviews with Terry, a wonderful article with Paul Kidby, various authors talk about their favourite book by Terry, and a little piece from Rob Wilkins about the future - nothing there that we didn't know, but it was nice to see The Wee Free Men is still being worked on.

You can order a copy online if you cannot find one in the shops. Just make sure you have the Shipping option ot the right geographical location.

2.2 Good Omens - Merchandise

There are all sorts of wonderful Good Omens merchandise emerging. Some of it was only available if you were at certain events over the last year and some of it is only available to buy online.

Here I am going to try and list some of it for your perusal.

Good Omens Pin Badges from Discworld.com.

These were the first bit of Good Omens merchandise available back in 2018. We bought ours back at the International Discworld convention in 2018.

Available in two colourways - White with Silver writing or Black with Gold writing, these pin badges are the new Amazon prime Good Omens logo.

Costing just 6BGP each or the pair for 10 GBP we think they are a steal. [plus shipping]

To see the badges and get yourself a set, head over to discworld.com

Good Omens Wings Pin Badge

This pin badge first showed up at the New York Comic Con as an exclusive giveaway to those who visited the Good Omens booth. It then reappeared with a slightly different backing board at SXSW 2019

It's white wings with an hourglass between is subtle yet makes a statement.

They do occasionally pop up on the bay of E if you really want one.

NYCC pin

Talking of New York Comic Con.

They gave away a couple more items to those who visited NYCC.

A beautiful notebook designed to look like the Nice and Accurate prophecies of Agnes Nutter book from the TV series is IMHO the nicest thing they produced as a marketing tool.

It was also given away at SXSW 2019.

They also gave away a Good Omens poster and there was a chance to get it signed by some of the cast at NYCC.

The poster is so superbly designed that you may dream of owning two of them so you can hang them side by side.

Again these do appear on the bay of E for those who must own one.

NYCC Poster

SXSW 2019 Items

The Austin event was full of Good Omens branded merchandise.

Everything from plastic glasses with to dog bandanas

Some of the nicer items to take away was a goodie bag, that contained the aforementioned notebook and a copy of the new US TV cover of the original book.

A new lenticular poster was also available as well as an umbrella, copies of the Tadfield Enquirer (3 different issues) , a postcard and a Prophecy that you took out of an apple.

There was also the consumables such as plastic glasses with the logo on (we spied 2 different glasses) and napkins.

All of the above have been spotted on the bay of E and at occasional Discworld Charity Auctions.

Event use only items included dog coats for the Hellhounds in training, dog bandanas and T-shirts for the staff working the event.

2.3 Good Omens Event - 29th May at SouthBank Centre

Date : Wed 29th May 2019

Time :7.30pm (show is approx 90 mins)

Ticket Price : 15 GBP-25 GBP Booking fee 3GBP

Neil Gaiman : Good Omens

The master storyteller reflects on reinventing the modern classic Good Omens for the screen.

Before he died in 2015, Sir Terry Pratchett asked Neil Gaiman to make a television series of the internationally beloved novel they wrote together thirty years ago.

Ahead of the series launching on Amazon Prime Video and the BBC, hear from Gaiman himself about adapting the novel as well as being the showrunner for the series, which stars David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm and Miranda Richardson, to name but a few.

For one night only, Gaiman speaks about bringing his original collaboration with Pratchett to life, the differences between page and screen, how the characters continue to surprise him and why this wicked comedy about Armageddon remains relevant today.

2.4 Troll Bridge European Premiere - Update

Troll Bridge hits British waters on Monday 27th May at 1pm as part of the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival at the Ffwrnes Theatre in Llanelli.

The special Q&A with Troll Bridge directory Daniel Knight hosted by our very own Rachel has gained two more members of the Troll Bridge Team. VFX supervisor Christian Bloch and Cohen the Barbarian himself Don Bridges will be joining Daniel and Rachel on stage to take questions from the audience and those watching live on Carmarthen Bay Film Festival's Facebook page.

So far 400 fans have got tickets, currently there are no more tickets available.* There are plenty more fans wanting tickets so if you cannot attend, please state so on the Facebook event page so other fans can find you and you can email them your tickets.

There are already offers of spare tickets on the event page from others - If you want to come, snap them up! No-one should charge you for the tickets as they were free in the first place so please don't pay for them!

COSPLAY ALERT! COSPLAY ALERT !

We, at Discworld Monthly, encourage EVERYONE to attend in costume to show Llanelli and the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival how wonderfully eclectic Discworld fans are. Jason will be there as Rincewind and we already know of many who will be dressed as their favourite characters too so join in the fun and come along as your favourite. The press may well be there and it would be wonderful to show Carmarthen Bay Film festival how amazing the Discworld Fandom is.

We will be around the Ffwrnes Theatre from 12 noon before the European Premiere so come along and meet up with the crew, the Discworld Monthly team and the huge amount of fans who will be attending.

After the event, many fans, including the cast and crew of the film will be celebrating in the bar of the theatre for many hours until we have to move to a local pub later in the evening. DO join us as everyone will be more than happy to have selfies, sign stuff and generally have lots of fun for the rest of the day!

Do keep an eye on the Facebook event page called European Premiere 'Troll Bridge' by SnowGum Films for additional information right up until the event itself as we will now be posting about the event there instead of sending out extra newsletters.

Troll Bridge has been entered into the Short Film Category and here we will get to see the 25 minute version of the film. We will find out at the Awards dinner on the 30th May if Troll bridge has won. Do keep an eye out on our Social Media Channels for that news !

* For those who have already reserved tickets, great news, your tickets are still valid for the new larger screen. If your tickets was for the second showing please ensure you turn up for the 1pm showing (ignore the time in your ticket and be there for the one big screening at 1pm) .

3. DiscTrivia

This month Jason decided to make the questions particularly hard after a conversation he had with Andrew Nevill at the Irish Discworld Convention! Good luck everyone else!

Q1.Where does Bleakey work?
Q2.Who is the author of "Legendes and Antiquities of the Ramtops"?
Q3.Where did Dykeri, author of Principles of Navigation, famously get lost?
Q4.Who is believed to be the first-ever troll?
Q5.Who is Lio!rt Dragonlord's father?

The answers as usual can be found at the end of this issue.

4. An Insight : New edition paperbacks of Wyrd Sisters, Mort, Guards! Guards! and Good Omens

By Rachel Anthony-Rowlands

The new editions arrived in our hands via the post a couple of weeks ago and I have been struggling to find something to write about them.

I'll start with the new editions of Wyrd Sisters, Mort and Guards! Guards!

I'll be honest, these covers are bright and are actually better looking in real life than the images we saw online. They are really quite fresh feeling and I personally love the embossing on the covers.

The introductions by Neil Gaiman, Joanne Harris and Ben Aaronovitch are worth the cover price alone so I won't spoil them for you as they are all about 4 pages long each, so here is a quick insight into them.

Neil Gaiman gives us an insight into his relationship with Terry. Be warned, tissues may well be needed.

Joanne Harris tells us how she first came across Terry's books whilst on her very first book signing tour and how she ended up reading Wyrd Sisters.

Ben Aaronovitch pours his love for Guards! Guards! onto the page so eloquently that you actually want him to write more than just the four and a half pages you actually get in the introduction.*

* Ben we know you probably read our newsletter, I really do want to see you write more about your love for Terry's books. If you ever need an outlet and feel the need, we would happily give your musings about them a home here.

Good Omens - Tv-Tie in cover.

This is the original novel with a new cover. We've been expecting these for a while.

I can't put my finger on it but it's a bit weird having David Tennant looking at you on the cover.

It's not that I haven't had TV-tie in editions before, I really can't put my finger on why this one "feels" weird in my hands. (we have American Gods, The Colour of Magic, Hogfather and Going Postal - all TV tie-in covers, they never felt weird.)

There is some images from the TV series inside the back cover, one of the images of Crowley I hadn't seen before.

It still has the Terry on Neil and Neil on Terry interviews in the back, nothing seems to have changed. It's a nice addition to the collection of Good Omens books on our shelves but I can't really see a reason to own it.

If you want one to keep, giveaway, burn in the hope that all CDs will stop changing to the Best of Queen, then buy a copy via our affiliate links.

5. Competition Result - Mug and IDWCon Goodies

We hadn't had a competition for ages and as we were heading out to Cork for the Irish convention we thought we would offer one of our mugs and whatever goodies we can find from the Irish Discworld Convention to give the lovely person with the correct answer to last month's question. The Goodies we found was a lovely Members Pack donated by the IDWConcom team and a sweet little Shot tankard !

Q.How many Irish Discworld Conventions have there been including this year?
And the answer was 6!

Congratulations to our winner Kevin Williams from Worthing, West Sussex. Your prize will head into the post next week once we get back from a weekend with the Loonies in Wincanton!

6. Competition - SFX Good Omens and Terry Celebration Issue

We laid our hands on an extra copy of Issue 313 which contains lots of stuff on Good Omens, a Good Omens poster and a special supplement all about Terry and Neil.

To be in with a chance of winning it and a I heart Discworld Monthly window sticker, just answer both parts of this question.

Q.When will Good Omens premiere on Amazon Prime? And how many episodes will there be?

Email the answers and your name and address to

Closing date for entry is Monday 20th May 2019. Good Luck !

Your address will only be used for sending out your prize should you be the lucky winner. Once prizes are sent out all address details will be destroyed. Entries received after the closing date or sent to any other address will be ignored. No more than one entry per person will be accepted - multiple entries will result in a ban from the competition. Failure to answer the questions or provide your postal address will prevent you from being entered into the competition. Answers to the questions must not be posted to any websites before the competition ends. The judges' decision is final. The competition is open to all readers.

"Twenty two years ago this month, Jason started writing Discworld Monthly. The first ever issue was, totally by accident, sent out on Terry's birthday in 1997."

Wished I'd discovered it back then - it took me till 2010 to get involved in the DW community …..

Diarmund Fahy writes: It seems to be that de-cluttering time of year again! I recently discovered three brand-new 2009 Discworld calendars, still in their shrink-wrapping, during my decennial reading room clearout and as I already have the copy I used myself in 2009, I thought they might be of interest to other fans. I think they're worth around £30 each so anyone that's interested can contact me at

Jude Parsons writes: I have a pristine unsigned copy of Once More With Footnotes available. First edition, third printing. If you are interested in buying it, please contact me with sensible offers at:

Brian Richardson writes: After my wife has de-cluttered our spare room it appears that I have a brand new copy of the original version of the THUD board game, still shrink-wrapped, that I would love to sell to a fan who will appreciate it more than I do. I would like 30.00 GBP for it, plus postage (or, if you live in or near NE Lincolnshire, you can collect it) . Please contact me via email ( ) if interested.

Discworld Monthly writes: If *we* didn't already have several Thud sets we would bit your hand off for a copy. But we'll let one of our readers make you an offer instead.

Fancy a holiday to the land of the librarian and a universe full of wonders? Though it it would be too expensive?

Then look no further...join Andrea, a lifelong STP fan and conservation biologist, at her guest house in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Not only can you go jungle trekking to see if you can spot the librarian and his friends. the monkeys (well, not actually friends..more like acquaintances) . You can also go on village walks, do cooking class, go river swimming and so much more.

Have a look at her website and drop Andrea and email or whatsapp with any questions at all. There's a 5% discount if you start your email with your favourite discworld quote!

Green Hill Guest House

.....fyi...Andrea would like to bring your attention to this quote

"It was the special sort of beautiful area which is only beautiful if you can leave after briefly admiring its beauty and go somewhere else where there are hot tubs and cold drinks. Actually staying there for any length of time is a penance."

14. The End

This month's issue is brought to you by too many events, not enough time, unexpected trips to the hospital, too much alcohol, lots of rollercoasters, a big blue bear and an April Fools joke that backfired spectacularly...

The deadline for submissions to issue 266 of Discworld Monthly is Monday 20th May 2019.

14.9 The Final Word...

*Rachel here*

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.

GNU Terry Pratchett...
