1. Editorial

Welcome to issue 238. Discworld news is like waiting for buses, nothing for months then two great pieces of news in a couple of weeks.

First we've got the fourth Charlie Russell Terry Pratchett documentary to look forward to in early 2017, starring Paul Kaye as Terry, and secondly the news that the Good Omens TV adaptation will be going ahead to be shown in 2018. It appears that all the work that has been going on behind the scenes at Narrativia is beginning to pay off. It amazes me just how long these thing take. The initial meeting about the Good Omens adaptation took place way back in 2011. Personally I can't wait to see the first pictures from the set or the first bit of casting news etc. We will, of course, keep you up to date with any / all news that we can find out.

2. News

The fourth Charlie Russell documentary about Terry, called Terry Pratchett: Back in Black, will be broadcast on BBC2 later this year. The documentary will feature Paul Kaye as Terry and will include contributions from authors Neil Gaiman and Val McDermid, and Terry's business manager and all round nice guy Rob Wilkins.

Paul Kaye met with Terry's wife Lyn when he was filming in Terry's office and Lyn, Rhianna and Rob are extremely happy with the way the documentary has turned out. They have said that Paul was a delight to work with, was incredibly respectful of Terry and they were thoroughly impressed at his commitment to get it right.

The BBC stated: "The documentary film is, by turns, surreal, witty and unexpectedly poignant."

We at Discworld Monthly have been very impressed with the first three documentaries that were at times very hard to watch but also fulfilling, entertaining and educational (hence the awards that they won). We hope the fourth one will be more of the same.

On Tuesday 10th January Neil Gaiman tweeted "I'm writing my bit for a press release on GOOD OMENS, and realising, with a cold awe, that I wrote the first 5000 words of it 30 years ago."

Back in July last year Neil was interviewed by Digital Spy and hinted that Good Omens would consist of six one-hour episodes and would be made by the BBC. He also said that filming would start very early in 2017.

The official press release was subsequently issued and you can read more about the adaptation later in this issue.

* From: "Brian Wakeling" pterry.theatre2018@sabremeister.me.uk

April 2018 would have seen Sir Terry Pratchett's 70th birthday. He had a well-known connection with the theatre, and so to celebrate, why not put on a play? Local theatre companies around the world can use this month to stage any Discworld play, in a great big celebration and commemoration of Sir Terry's life and work.

I discussed the idea with Colin Smythe (Terry's agent) at the Discworld Convention 2016, and he said it was a good one, go for it. So here we are, going for it. Let everybody know, and book the performance slot at the next planning meeting at your local theatre group (which is usually a year in advance of the performance slot, hence the press release now).

Terry's birthday was on the 28th of April, but this event is planned to run for the whole month, because a) theatres have different regular performance slots, and b) if everywhere did a Discworld play all at the same time, people would need a teleporter and a time machine to see more than one.

This event has a Facebook event page (PTerry's Theatre Month 2018). I am more-co-ordinating-than-organising this, and if you have any questions about the event you can contact me at pterry.theatre2018@sabremeister.me.uk

Any questions regarding putting on the plays need to be addressed to Colin Smythe at info@colinsmythe.co.uk

If any theatre groups want to take part in this, please remember that you need to contact Colin Smythe for permission, and copies of the script you want to perform can be obtained from the publishers (detailed at Discworld Monthly Play Requests).

If you do produce something for this event, please let me know, either through email or on the Facebook page, and it will be recorded for posterity.

This is an entirely non-profit event, organised for the sole purpose of commemorating and celebrating the works of Sir Terry Pratchett, Kt OBE.

Discworld Monthly replies: If you do decide to put on a Terry Pratchett production let us know (once you have permission etc.) and we'll help to promote it via this newsletter and through our social media outlets as we have already done for countless productions in the past.

Is there a Discworld meeting group on the Isle of Wight?

DWM replies: We are not aware of a Discworld group that meets up on the Isle of Wight. If not, why not suggest a location (somewhere public like a pub would be good and a date and time) and invite people to come along?

I am very disappointed in The Colour Of Magic on TV: wrong to cast David Jason as Rincewind, too much of Trymon, bits taken from other books, what happened to Hrun / Weasel and others? Actor playing Twoflower too westernised, surely, as coming from the Counterweight Continent he should be more Asian. C.G.I. very good and mostly good, still disappointed though.

* From: "Ursula Russell" russellresidence@yahoo.co.uk

Having loved Terry Pratchett's books since I first read "Wyrd Sisters" I can't help but feeling that his legacy is being over-commercialised. I wonder whether this is really something that he would have wished, assuming that there is enough money in the kitty to support the family and others.

I am reminded now of Elvis Presley, who ended up as a huge commercial enterprise after his death by being exploited mercilessly, his quality as a singer forgotten.

I would have wished a more dignified memorial to Terry Pratchett such as support for the research into Alzheimers, a subject he himself so ardently pursued. There are thousands of other sufferers in this world.

There are obviously still people who are just discovering the world of TP, and I am glad for them, but please do not attempt to copy him. He is irreplaceable.

8. DiscTrivia

We're back with five challenging trivia questions for you - this month all the questions relate to The Carpet People. Good luck, Jason.

Q1.
What was the collective name of the carpet people?
Q2.
What is Snibril's "horse" called?
Q3.
What is Pismire's role?
Q4.
What material are Tarnerii made of?
Q5.
What creature turns the people to stone?

The (hopefully correct) answers can be found at the end of this issue.

9. Good Omens Television Adaptation

On January 19th Amazon Studios and BBC Television announced that they have green-lit a six-part adaptation of Good Omens to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2018 and later on the BBC in the UK.

The adaptation was written entirely by Neil Gaiman (who co-wrote the original novel with Terry). Neil will also serve as Showrunner. Executive Producers of the series are: Neil Gaiman, Caroline Skinner (Doctor Who) and Chris Sussman (Fleabag) for BBC Studios and Rob Wilkins (Choosing to Die) and Rod Brown (Going Postal) for Narrativia.

The adaptation will be co-produced by Amazon Prime Video, BBC World Wide, Narrativia and The Blank Corporation.

Good Omens takes place in 2018 when the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

Neil Gaiman, writer, said: "Almost thirty years ago, Terry Pratchett and I wrote the funniest novel we could about the end of the world, populated with angels and demons, not to mention an eleven-year-old Antichrist, witchfinders and the four horsepeople of the Apocalypse. It became many people's favourite book. Three decades later, it's going to make it to the screen. I can't think of anyone we'd rather make it with than BBC Studios, and I just wish Sir Terry were alive to see it."

The full text of the press release is available at: phx.corporate-ir.net

* * * * *

Narrativia are delighted to announce their first major television Co-Production with BBC Studios and Neil Gaiman's Blank Corporation.

Rob Wilkins said, 'Development began back in 2011 when Terry was still very much part of the process and we are thoroughly delighted that Neil has written six absolutely brilliant episodes that bring their novel to life. Terry would be thrilled.'

Rod Brown added 'Narrativia was founded in 2012 by Sir Terry himself, with a mission statement to seek out co-production partners and broadcasters who not only had the vision to 'get' Terry's (and in this case Neil's) tone of writing and storytelling, but also to have the financial ability to present his work with no compromise of scale or talent and at the highest possible quality, whatever medium we were working in. This TV production announcement, especially as it is one of a number of exciting projects we have in the pipeline, delivers on Terry's vision, as did our other recent announcement of our partnership with The Jim Henson Company on the Wee Free Men film project to be written by multi award-winning Rhianna Pratchett'. We know that Good Omens, with its wonderful script written by the legendary Neil Gaiman, and the talent we are working with at Amazon and the BBC will be one the must-see shows of 2018!
